How I'm Staying Healthy and Fit from Home
“Uncertainty” has been a tough pill for me to swallow in the last few weeks. I’m a woman who thrives on having a plan and knowing what my next step is, but you know what they say about life…”nothing is certain”! Sometimes it’s so easy to get caught up in what you can’t control and completely forget about all the things you can control. Keeping my diet and fitness routine as close to “normal” as I can while my gym is closed, has been a really positive thing in my life these days. It feels good to feel good! To help you out, below are the top 4 things I'm doing to stay on track at home. I'd love to hear your tips if you have any!
^Here's my gym I'm missing so much right now (TrvFit Perrysburg)^
1. Set Goals
There’s a big difference between waking up on Monday morning and saying “Okay, I’m going to work out this week.” versus “Okay, I am going to promise myself I’ll workout 4 days this week for at least 30 minutes”. Without a gym to physically go to right now, I find myself making excuses to do the bare minimum if I don’t set a specific goal. In a normal week, I’d commit to my goal by booking my workout classes for the entire week ahead at my gym (TrvFit in Perrysburg). That way, I’d never want to skip because they’re expecting me! This brings me to my next point.
Having someone in your corner with similar goals is a total game changer. My cousin and I have been working out together for a couple months now and we both agree that we motivate each other because we want to support each other. On top of that, TrvFit has done nothing but provide more value to their members during this strange season of life. We’ve all become friends in a Facebook group together and they’ve created a 4 week accountability program for us. Each week, we are tasked to complete a certain number of workouts and share it with the group. We’re having so much fun cheering each other on everyday and posting funny “sweaty selfies” or pictures of our dogs or kids joining in the workouts.
I wanted to tell you guys, too… TrvFit rolled out their “On Demand” service a couple weeks ago. This is what I’ve been using at home to workout. Basically, you sign up through their website and you get access to a database of different workouts. The most equipment you ever need are a couple dumbbells (you could even sub out the dumbbells for things around your house, like water bottles). The workouts range from high intensity to yoga and running. The instructors are upbeat too, which I love! (P.S. You can try 30 days free. I highly recommend giving it a whirl!)
3. Plan Your Meals
Remember what I said about planning in the beginning of this? I like to have at least most of my lunches and dinners planned for the week. This way, I only have one trip to the grocery store per week. Plus, I’ve already bought the food and I don’t want it to go bad if I decide to order a pizza instead of the healthy meal I had planned. My other trick to keep my diet in check is the My Fitness Pal app for tracking nutrition (it’s free). This is yet another tip I picked up from my coaches at TrvFit. (Are you seeing a theme here? I’m a big fan of TrvFit. Haha!) Anyway, after using the app for a few weeks to track my calories, carbohydrates, proteins and fats, I learned how to find a better balance between protein and carbohydrates. I’m not super strict on this, but I like to check in every once in a while.
4. Drink Water
You’ve probably heard this a million times, but it’s so important! I have a 25 ounce water bottle that I always carry with me and I aim to drink at least 3 of those per day. That’s pretty easy to do if you get in a sweaty workout everyday! You can also track this in the My Fitness Pal app, if you tend to forget what you drank throughout the day like I do. In fact, if the nutrition tracking is a little overwhelming, you could simply start with tracking your water and work your way up.
I hope this has been helpful to you! If you have any other tips for me or questions about this, I’d love to hear from you. I’m no expert, but I KNOW the experts and can get you the answers you need!
