6 Inexpensive Ways to Turn your Home into a Sanctuary
Sick of being cooped up? I think we can all attest to that! Here are some simple, inexpensive ways that I’ve been upleveling my space to make this time more enjoyable and cozy.
1. Start with a quick declutter
I’m not talking a top-to-bottom, clean-out-the-drawers declutter (unless you want to of course!). Give yourself 30 minutes to do a quick sweep of the house and put away or throw away anything you don’t need out. To get you started, here are a couple ideas: clear countertops off, throw that stack of old magazines away, make a donate pile of decorations you no longer like, move the shoe pile away from the backdoor and into your closet…you get the picture.
2. Candles/oil diffusers
Scent is a great way to set a calm and welcoming tone! I personally like calming scents because I usually light candles at night. To me, that would be something like lavender or a clean laundry scent. If I light a candle during the day, it’s usually some type of citrus because that feels energizing to me. Oil diffusers are a great way to go as well (and safer than a flame, if you have little ones or don’t trust yourself with fire).
3. Good music
We don’t want negative news playing constantly in the background of our lives. I love turning on a good playlist from Spotify or Amazon Music while I cook, clean, work, you name it! (Maybe you even introduce some 90’s music to your little ones with a little dance party?! I definitely recommend that!)
4. Open the shades
Let the natural light in and open the windows if it’s nice outside. Sunlight can work wonders for uplifting your spirits.
5. Bring nature inside
Plants literally bring life into the space! Visit the Toledo Farmers Market in the Spring and Summer months to pick up some locally grown flowers. In the winter months, I pick up the “Grower’s Bunch” at Kroger. They’re usually around $3 and they’re just greens, like eucalyptus. They smell fresh and they last longer than flowers. There’s no shame in buying fake plants either…we can pretend they’re real and it will still have a nice impact on your room!
6. Soft blankets and pillows
The perfect additions to add a dose of “cozy” to any room. I like to keep super soft pillows and blankets around the house for optimum Netflix binging and naps.
